The foundation of the internet games is based on two core elements which include time-sharing and host-based networks.
There are three stages associated to how online games are made. They include;
1. Pre-Production Stage
This stage is where the project of making an online game begins. It defines what the game is all about, why it should be made and what it is going to take to make it. The game might be made to represent a particular idea or a certain type of technology. In this stage, you would find answers to questions like:
- What is the online game about?
- Who is the audience of the online game?
- Is there a market for the game online?
- What online platforms will it be published on?
- How will it be sold?
- What staff and resources will the making require?
- What is the estimated budget?
This stage can last between a week to a year and it includes;
The Game Design Document (GDD)
This is the document for direction. It helps everyone on the pre-production team to understand the vision of the online game in progress. This document includes the idea/concept; genre; story and characters; core game mechanics. At this point in the game making is where the developers brainstorm about the gameplay; level and world design; art/sketches and monetization strategy.
This happens in the pre-production stage to test whether the game will work or not. In other words, it checks the art direction, gameplay, user experience and mechanics. Prototyping often begins with paper designs to test the theories. Many of the game ideas do not pass this stage. It helps to check if the game is as much fun as hoped for.
2. Production Stage
This stage is the longest stage. It involves everyone on the production team and it takes between one and four years. The game takes its real shape. Every decision in this stage is consciously taken. This consists of the scoring system, rules, environment, look, sounds, level of difficulty and colours. The production milestones include; prototype, first playable, vertical slice, vertical slice, Pre-Alpha, Alpha, Beta, Gold Master.
3. Post-Production Stage
This is where the making process of the game continues. In this stage, a post-mortem or debrief is held to discuss what worked and what did not work in the game.
